Deep eutectic solvents (DES) have been suggested as alternatives to classical room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) and been used for the electrodeposition of metals. A DES/GC (GC = glassy carbon) electrode interface was investigated by infrared spectroscopy, namely polarization-modulation infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS). This technique allows distinguishing between chemical
information from the diffusion layer and the species adsorbed on the electrode surface. The first in situ PM-IRRAS study of an electrode reaction in an RTIL shows the very slow formation of an adsorbed solvent layer at open circuit potential (OCP). The species adsorbed on GC and their effects on zinc electrodeposition have been investigated in detail.
