Created in 2005, the International Affairs division at UFPI is directly linked to the Chancellor's Office and is in charge of the university's international life. It establishes partnerships between UFPI and various other universities and institutions that present academic interest in Brazil and worldwide, developing the academic, technical, scientific and cultural cooperation among them. Thus it makes it possible for its professors, students and employees to take courses, do research and participate in projects abroad. Likewise, the foreigners who benefit from these international partnerhips are welcomed at UFPI and bear the same rights. So far, UFPI has partnerships with the following Italian and Portuguese universities: Verona, Padova and Florence (Italy) and Madeira, Évora, Porto and Coimbra (Portugal). It is also a member of Grupo Tordesillas (www.grupotordesillas.org), the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (www.oui-iohe.org), the Portuguese Language Universities Association (www.aulp.org), and the Coimbra Group of Brazilian Universities Association.
