About the university
Educating people, transforming Piauí
The Federal University of Piauí (UFPI) is located in Teresina, the capital of Piauí state, in the northeast of Brazil. The interior of Piauí state is more developed than its coast, which is only 66 kilometres long, with warm water beaches and coconut trees.
Piauí has several spots of tourist interest including a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the National Park of Serra da Capivara, which has more than 400 archaeological sites and the largest concentration of rupestrian art on the planet.
UFPI has approximately 16 thousand students enrolled at the undergraduate level in its 51 degree programs and 600 students at the graduate level in its 19 Master’s degree and 2 doctoral programs. UFPI has 5 campuses: Ministro Petrônio Portela (in Teresina), Cinobelina Elvas (in Bom Jesus), Parnaíba (in Parnaíba), Senador Helvídio Nunes de Barro (in Picos) and Floriano (in Floriano).
The level of education offered at UFPI is connected to the increase in the number of professors with a doctoral degree and to the fact that more than 60% of our professors are also researchers. Therefore, most of the professors who teach are also investing in research which has made UFPI respected worldwide. There are innumerous projects involving undergraduate and graduate students in all areas of knowledge from arts to medicine, from physical education to philosophy. This allows the generation of new knowledge through research with and for the students, who are many times on a scholarship from federal agencies, the state of Piauí or UFPI itself. In the near future, UFPI aims at the improvement in the level of its teaching and research through partnerships developed in Brazil and around the globe.
